We have been voting on the important issues in kindergarten. Hillary who? Donald what?! We care about things like. . .
We get pumped up with the video and eat the snacks. Some of us inhale the snacks. . .
While we’re all hopped up on MSG, I take time to discuss the importance of the secret ballot. The kids practice the voting process, dropping the vote into the ballot box, and then everyone attempts to not blurt out which one he or she voted for.
Then, if you are a kindergarten teacher, you regret everything because the first time that you fill out the graph during math, it’s frustrating. I used to do this whole-group style- HUGE MISTAKE. I now do this in small groups and still forget that the kids don’t know how to do this yet. But, we get through it and I try to remind everyone the purpose of this math activity.
We are counting ballots, just as in a real voting process. Then we show all of that information onto one sheet- “Graphs are a way to show a lot of information in one place,” I tell them. Tallies are another way to show a number, so is a number problem. This is all good stuff, but the first time is hard and you may want to have some Takis hidden in your desk for you to shame-eat over prep hour.
I have had so many questions about Takis on my Instagram– I get them at any Dollar Store. They are so good- for realz. Eat them now.
Continuing with culturally relevant material, we voted on our favorite song/dance. But first we had to sing and dance! You know that I did, too!
This activity was a new addition to the pack. I wanted to have voting and math to be something that the kids would get excited about, and it worked!
Oh, and you know what? The second, third, fourth time that you graph is SO MUCH easier and you get to see those genius sparks flying. Totally worth the pain of the first time. 🙂
After we danced, we began writing!
Could this be any cuter?
After we counted, graphed, tallied, etc. I let the kids glue the votes to chart paper and hang it in the hallway. Why? So that my principal can see that I am making learning relevant, that’s why.
Now, this next part is a tiny bit controversial because it involves a blue cat. But I will have you know that I got a take-down notice and “fought back” and it’s allowed to stay in the unit! All this will do is bring more sales to the cat people, so that can’t be bad. Right?!
The kids are in heaven! We have done favorite cracker, pet, and there is still so much more to vote on.
There’s even some books about ‘Merica in this pack, a bingo game, KWL charts, Word Wall words, and more!
I have done this unit for the past four years and each time, I love it more than the last! Voting can be fun. I swear.
Grab it today and use for many more election seasons.
